What is a Screampark? The term Screampark is something we want to educate the public about. It’s a haunted event that features several attractions all at one location. Typically, the staple attraction is a hayride, but not always. Screamparks are usually found on farms, within amusement parks, or on huge plots of land. Most Screamparks feature different types of attractions such as hayrides, haunted houses, corn mazes, haunted trails, blacklight 3D haunted houses, live shows and more. So who has the best Screampark in America? We are judging this category by the mass amount of different attractions and the quality of them all. Some Screamparks do not live up to their marketing hype when their “multiple attractions” are mostly small and gimmicky. However, there are several who are beyond your wildest dreams immense and action-packed with horrific fun. Well before I was editor of Hauntworld, I was always interested in the haunted houses, horror and science fiction. As a kid I watched everything from Bela Lugosi Dracula or Christopher Lee to Frankenstein or Mummy. My all-time favorite horror creature is Lon Chaney Jr. in his portrayal as The Wolfman. I would watch him battle Frankenstein over and over hoping for a different outcome each time!
Horror movies have changed a lot from the infancy when Universal made Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy or the cult classic Creature From The Black Lagoon. I believe slasher movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre made people afraid to enter an old house. Films like The Exorcist created fear of the devil and demonic possessions. Perhaps many of todays best horror movies can be traced back to Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Exorcist.
For many Americans, watching a good scary movie is a favorite pastime and great for a first date or a way to celebrate the Halloween season. We love horror movies and now I present our top 13 bone chilling, scream machine horror movies that will make your skin crawl and give you nightmares. Our list was partially created based on the impact they had on society at the time they where released. For example Exorcist had people going to Church, Poltergiest had people checking under beds, Pyscho made people afraid of motels, and Dracula probably the original Monster movie made people believe in real monsters. Share your top 10 or top 13 scariest horror movies on our facebook page. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR FACEBOOK PAGE 1. The Conjuring :This movie made people afraid to live on a farm!
2. Insidious :Back to the roots of horror movies, no cgi fx, just screams on every frame.
3. The Exorcist :Everyone visited church after seeing this movie and feared the devil thereafter.
4. Poltergeist :This movie gave us the line ‘they’re here’ and clowns under the bed.
5. The Shinning :One of the creepiest haunted hotel movies ever made!
6. Halloween :One of the movies that started the slasher boogie man movie craze!
7. Trick R Treat :One of the most under rated cult classics and screams Halloween.
8. Sinister :Watch a movie and your entire family will die a gruesome death.
9. The Ring :Watch a video and you die! Creepy movie!
10. The Babadook :A psychological terror about a creature living in a little boys home.

Tulsa Hex House provides three haunted attractions in one location! hexhouse.com
Hex House is inspired by a true story from Tulsa’s dark past. In 1944, Carolann Smith was sentenced to prison for holding two young women under a hypnotic or occult spell for seven years. The police investigation uncovered proof of bondage, spell-casting, mesmerism, hypnotism and a casket buried in the back yard. What these two young girls went through was truly chilling. See full story: http://www.tulsahexhouse.com/about WARNING: Today the Hex House is one of the most extreme haunted attractions in America (not intended for children). Tulsa Hex House is an intense multi-element, walk through haunted attraction. You will be fully submerged in an altered reality that is much darker and less predictable than anything you’ve seen before. As you make your way through the flickering haunted hallways and eerie ghostly rooms of Hex House, you descend from mere creepiness into a full-on, intense nightmare that you won’t soon forget. The gruesome sets have horrific detail. The Actors are allowed to touch you and are trained to truly suspend reality for a moment in time allowing you to experience what real terror is.
WestSide Grim is also inspired by a true story from Tulsa’s haunted past. In the early 1920’s Tulsa opened its first amusement park (Crystal City). It offered patrons Tulsa’s first roller coaster, boat rides, concessions, side shows, a bath house and dance hall. Back then, amusement parks had a seedy side. After dark, concessions sold bootlegged alcohol by the bottle. Vaudeville was the rage and drunken patrons crowed into the dance hall to get their eyes (and often their hands) on Can-Can girls brought in from around the world. Organized crime was prevalent and Tulsa was no exception. For nearly 30 years Crystal City Amusement Park provided West Tulsa with entertainment of all kinds. Rumors and gossip centered around Crystal City until 1950 when the dance hall burned down and mysteriously took most of Crystal City with it. Today Westside Grim is located near if not exactly where the dance hall was located in West Tulsa, and this haunted event is like no other. The haunt is occupied by the West Tulsa Bootlegger; Mondo Grim. Mondo and his band of henchmen come at you from every direction as you walk through the burned down remains of the Bootleggers House, Crystal City Amusement Park and descend into the dark world of WestSide Grim. Experiencing the realistic carnage that Mondo Grim leaves in his wake. WestSide Grim is truly WestSide Scary!
Rise of the Living Dead – Is an indoor walk through zombie apocalypse set in an urban environment. The set design is realistic and has an urgent heart racing vibe. You won’t see masks here. The makeup is amazing! According to Gene Watson, it takes several hours every night to do their zombie makeup, and I believe it. These flesh eating, brain seeking Zombies are a work of art!
We talked in depth with Gene Watson, owner and president of Tulsa Hex House to find out more about the day to day operation.
“Being in the Haunt industry sounds fun, and it is. What most people don’t realize is how much hard work, man hours and sheer expense is involved. To be one of the best haunted houses in American takes commitment. We focus on three things. Quality of haunt design, staffing and promotion. Building a quality haunt and hiring talented actors isn’t enough. You must promote your haunt. We produce quality promotional material like our latest promo video: https://youtu.be/93hNhTvzstA
How many people does it take to operate Tulsa Hex House?
“We have over 65 actors nightly, 9 makeup artists, security, ticket booth, Sound and Lighting and parking lot attendees, so on busy nights our staff can reach triple digits.”
Why do you focus so much on make-up & costumes at your haunted house?
“We do go overboard on makeup and costumes. Our goal is to suspend reality for a moment and provide a truly terrifying experience for our customers. I think it’s hard to do that with a cheap costume and mask. We spend a lot of time on our makeup and costume but it pays off in the end for our customers.”
How important is the Hex House brand?
The brand is so vital we have it trademarked! Hex House is synonymous with horror, terror, fear, shock and panic. It isn’t enough for us to entertain our customers we scare them to create the most terrifying experience possible. We are intentional with everything we do.”
Where do you find all of those great haunt actors?
“Honestly they come to us. We have a great casting director (Steve Palmer) and a lot of veteran Hex House actors that are a wealth of knowledge. These guys know how to get to the fear of our customers, and once they get someone rattled they show no mercy. We have many customers that tap out and ask to leave the haunt early. We call that a job well done. The secret is that we are family and we love what we do!”
Why did you get into the haunt industry?
“I started off like most guys in the haunt game…simply going to haunted houses. I love Halloween and I would take my kids to haunted houses every year. I would always pick a busy Saturday night and go. I loved the long lines. It gave me a couple of hours to hang out with my kids when they were teenagers. It was an opportunity to be eyeball to eyeball with them for a couple hours before the haunt. They would be excited and apprehensive. It was great. Then after the haunt we would go eat and laugh about things that happened. I have five kids. The youngest is 7 and my oldest is 30. I get to spend a lot of time at Hex House with my kids. My son Nick is the General Manager and my other son Tanner works by my side and is instrumental in our success.”
Why is Hex House so successful?
“It’s our crew. They are dedicated to each other. It has been my greatest surprise. We truly are one big dysfunctional family! Our staff loves Hex House and they love working together. They feed from the energy and fear of our customers and provide the best haunt experience in Oklahoma.

While elaborate complex themes and backstories are common in modern Haunted Attractions, it was not the case twenty years ago. One of the things that made NETHERWORLD different back in the early years and still keeps it relevant in the modern age is the use of complex stories to both connect it from season to season and create a fresh start for marketing and production design each and every year. What follows are VERY short descriptions of the themes of NETHERWORLD from its first season to 2016. If you would like to learn more, see the museum page of www.fearworld.com or find our weekly blogs counting down till opening day of the 2016 season, year 20 of NETHERWORLD Haunted House! Year 5 2001 Buried Alive and Planet X in 3D - The main show revolved around the reanimated dead of a twisted monastic order controlled by a weird creature from another dimension. Planet X in 3D was filled with aliens, spaceships, pure science fiction and a visit to an optically amazing alien world – Planet X!
Year 6 2002 Inner Sanctum and House Of Creeps in 3D - The mad Dr. Vargas created a device to make his patients’ fears into reality in Inner Sanctum and guests had to confront these horrors along with the inmates of his notorious asylum as they attempted to escape the haunt. Year 7 2003 Dark Harvest, Vault 13 the Berserker Project and Tomb Of Darkness - Dark Harvest was an unsettling adventure through rural horror with scarecrows, abandoned farms, inbred townsfolk and of course, an encounter with the savage moss covered Harvestman. A return to VAULT 13 featured a secret base totally choked with green fog swarming with grotesque mutants, and the first year of our downstairs show had guests explore a pitch black Egyptian tomb of an accursed queen who had been purged from history… Necrotis!

NETHERWORLD appeared on CBS this Morning on Halloween this year in a very positive story on haunted attractions around the country.
Year 11 2007 Leviathan and Primal Fear - This year the upstairs Haunt that had previously been separated into two attractions was merged to create a much larger haunt called Leviathan. The theme was based on the Frankenstein legend with the creation of murderous flesh golems and an insidious plan to attack mankind. Primal Fear was a show encompassing as many of the deepest fears and phobias that one could possibly experience in a haunted house. This was one of the first years that NETHERWORLD was featured on the Travel Channel and it certainly wouldn’t be the last!
Year 12 2008 Carnivore and Mangler - Carnivore was a show about werewolves at war with the forces of the NETHERWORLD, the midpoint of a three year arc of famous classic monsters that had begun with Leviathan. Mangler debuted a tale of a methodical serial killer devoid of human emotion and immune to pain. The character of the Mangler became the de facto icon character of the downstairs show for years to come due to his popularity, and returned as a featured player or at least in a cameo role in all most all of the downstairs haunts from that point forward.
Year 13 2009 Blood Night and Zombie Rampage - In Blood Night the vampire lord Ghoulich devised a plan to black out the Sun so that vampires and creatures of the NETHERWORLD could ravage the earth without the fear of daylight. In Zombie Rampage, special chemicals developed to help soldiers fight better and to heal wounds get added to a popular energy drink, and when spilled into a local graveyard cause a…you guessed it… zombie rampage!
Year 14 2010 Gargoyle and Dead Salvage - Part 2 of the Blood Night saga sees an invasion of Gargoyles betraying the vampires in an all-out assault on both humans and undead. Dead Salvage explored the return of the Mangler as he began creating zombies with robotic parts in an indoor junkyard.
Year 15 2011 The Nightmares and Raw Meat - The final chapter of the Blood Night story featured the Gargoyles rulers, the Nightmare Kings, locked in all-out war with vampires and humanity. Raw Meat exposed alligators, mutants and worse living in the sewers and storm drains deep beneath us all!

Year 17 2013 The Dead Ones and Boogeyman – In The Dead Ones, The Inquisitor, a servant of the NETHERWORLD rises from YS to judge mankind. He finds that we have abandoned the old ways and summons the DEAD ONES – Skeletal life draining horrors to punish us. Year 18 2014 Season Of the Witch and Spliced - The Witches seek to stop the DEAD ONES by appeasing the Inquisitor. On Halloween they release creatures and spirits in a celebration of the old ways, but the doorway swings too wide and ghosts escape the NETHERWORLD in mass! Only the return of the legendary monsters of the NETHERWORLD has a chance of stopping them, but no matter what side wins we lose! In Vault 13: Meltdown, Proteus demands that the Manger make him a bride or he will set off all the warheads in the Vault creating a nuclear meltdown!
